Six years. Two hundred and forty something Thursdays, allowing for August.
He is good at it. I want to establish that, because false modesty would ruin the point. He is genuinely good. He does the work, he reads what he should read, he does not pretend to certainty he has not earned, and when somebody asks a question he cannot answer he says so and writes it down and brings something back the following week.
Nine or ten people around a table. Coffee. Somebody always brings the wrong kind of biscuit and it has become a thing.
He opens the text. They read it. He gives them the background, the shape of the argument, where the word appears elsewhere. Then he asks what they make of it and they talk, sometimes well, sometimes about something entirely different, and at about nine he draws it together and somebody prays and they go home.
In six years he has never once said anything about himself.
Not deliberately. He would be genuinely startled if you accused him of hiding. He has simply never had a slot for it. There is no point in the evening where the person holding the book gets asked how he is, and he has never made one, and by now the shape has set like concrete.
His marriage has been difficult since roughly 2022. Two of those years he taught through with a sentence in his head that he never said. His son does not speak to him properly and has not since a Christmas he can date exactly.
And every Thursday he opens the text and gives them something real, and every Thursday he goes home and takes his coat off in a dark hall, and it does not occur to him to be sad about this, which is the most concerning part.

The verse does not say one taught the other
There is a small, strange, easily missed sentence near the end of Malachi, at the end of a book which is mostly God arguing with a nation.
Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him.Malachi 3:16
Take that at the head of your own table. You belong in that traffic as a member of it. The word says they that feared the Lord spake often one to another, and it is the Holy Spirit who preserved the phrase so the man with the book would not exempt himself.
Look at the grammar of it, because the grammar is the whole thing.
They spoke one to another. Not one to the group. Not one taught, the rest received. One to another, which is the language of exchange, of a thing passing back and forth between people at the same height.
And what happened next is remarkable. Heaven wrote it down. There is a book of remembrance in that verse and what is recorded in it is not sermons. It is ordinary people saying true things to each other.
So take this at your table, and know it is not my flattery, it is what is written: your own voice belongs in that room, right now, as a member of it. His word says they spake often one to another and the Lord hearkened, and it is the Holy Spirit who preserved that phrase so that a man holding a book would not conclude he is the exception to the traffic.
Six years you have been the one talking and none of it has been one to another. All of it has been one to nine.
There was a man in England in the seventeen hundreds who had a night in a small meeting where his heart, as he wrote, was strangely warmed, and who then built a movement, and the beam that carried it was not his preaching, though he preached in fields and mine yards and prisons for fifty years.
It was six or seven people in a room, once a week. A class meeting.
And here is the distinction that ought to go straight into your Thursday, because you have almost certainly conflated the two things your whole adult life. That room was not a study. Nobody taught in it. There was no text on the table and no expert at the head. A handful of people were asked, out loud, how it truly stood with them, and each one answered, and the others heard it.
He ran both. He preached, and he sat in a class, and he was asked the question in the class like everybody else, because he understood that a man can teach the covenant for a decade and never once be inside a covenant conversation.
The name got attached to them as mockery of how methodical they were. They kept it, because it was accurate.
A warmed heart with no method cools. A method with no warmth is only a schedule. He held both, and the hinge was a room where the teacher was a member.
Hear me carefully. I am not telling you to stop teaching, and I am not sending you to a program. Your Thursday is good work and it should continue. His word says one to another, and it is His Spirit who does the work in that, and what is missing is not a new institution. It is nine seconds at the start of an evening you already run.
You are not hiding. You are following a rule about where the teacher stands, and it is a good rule inside a lecture and a terrible one inside a life, and nobody ever told you the difference.
And the rule you learned was a good one in the wrong room. Scripture says they spake often one to another and the Lord hearkened, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been listening in that room for six years.
So change nine seconds of Thursday. Not the study. Not the format. Nine seconds.
Before you open the text, say one sentence about your own week. "It has been a hard one at home." "I have not slept much." "I have found this passage difficult and I think it is because of something going on with me."
Then open the book and teach exactly as you always do.
Here is why that small thing works. It does not turn your study into a class meeting, and it should not. What it does is put your own voice into the room in the same register as everybody else's for nine seconds, and it tells nine people that the traffic runs both ways, which they do not currently know, and which they will believe the moment you demonstrate it.
You are heard right now, and it is not my sentiment, it is written: the Lord hearkened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been in that room for six years hearing every word you gave them and every word you did not.
And nobody has failed you at that table. Nine people have simply never been shown that the man with the book is somebody they are allowed to ask about. That is not their neglect. It is the shape of the evening, and you built the shape, and you can put a door in it on Thursday.
You speak one to another now, and not only from the head of the table.
You are heard in that room, and you have been for six years, including in every week you said nothing about yourself. His word says the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that record and does not only write down the teaching.
Declare this over yourself
- Shape of Thursday evening, you are a good structure and you are not a wall, and you do not get to keep me out of my own room. His word says they that feared the Lord spake often one to another, so I put a door in you in the name of Jesus.
- Rule I learned somewhere and never examined, that the one holding the book does not appear in the text, you have no standing over my life. Scripture says the Lord hearkened and heard it, and His Spirit has been in that room six years hearing what I never said.
- God, I speak one to another now and not only from the head of the table. Your word says a book of remembrance was written for people saying true things to each other, so nine seconds of Thursday belong to my own voice, and the coffee is still being poured when I say it.
