One Step Since Last August

This message is for A believer comparing this August with last August needs to recognize one quiet movement toward holiness without measuring against anybody else or demanding completion.

Two notebook pages lie side by side on the kitchen table.

The first is dated 18 August last year. The second is dated this morning. The handwriting is the same hurried slope, and both pages carry a coffee ring near the bottom because some habits do not improve at all.

Last year's page says: "I was interrupted three times and lost the whole evening to anger."

This year's page says: "I was interrupted three times. I answered sharply once, then came back and apologized before bed."

The reader almost misses the difference.

They see the sharp answer. They see that patience is still not effortless. They remember somebody else who seems gentle without trying and another believer who speaks about transformation as if every old reflex packed a suitcase and left.

But one sentence has changed.

Last August, anger owned the evening. This August, grace interrupted the anger.

The pen circles the changed sentence, slowly, as if the hand is not sure it has permission.

One Step Since Last August

The One who began is still at work

Paul writes to people he loves with this confidence:

Being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.Philippians 1:6

Take that where you are standing. You are inside a work God began and God is finishing. The word says He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been performing it through a year you could not measure.

The verse places the beginning and the completion in the same hands. God began the good work. God remains faithful to complete it. Between those two truths is a real human life with repeated interruptions, apologies, coffee rings, and days that do not look holy from across the room.

Stuck, you are not the true name of this year. Philippians 1:6 is the written ground, and the Holy Spirit points to the good work God began rather than the flawless performance I have not reached.

This is not permission to rename harm as growth. The sharp answer mattered. The apology did not erase it. Holiness is not a flattering story we tell about ourselves.

It is also not honest to erase the apology.

Something happened between the two pages. A person who once surrendered the whole evening returned before bed. That return may look small beside somebody else's patience, but somebody else is not the measure on this table.

Comparison, you have no authority to grade this August with another person's life. Scripture in Philippians names God as the finisher, and the Holy Spirit lets me recognize His work without pretending the work is complete.

There is gratitude in that sentence, but no guarantee stapled to a personal story. One person's apology is not a formula for another person's growth. It is evidence that grace can leave a mark quiet enough to need circling.

I know the temptation to improve the testimony. We want to say the anger disappeared. We want a clean before and after because a clean story feels useful. But the true story has a limp: the sharp answer still happened, and the return happened too.

Both belong on the page.

That is how gratitude stays truthful. It does not airbrush the first sentence or enlarge the second. It says, "I still limp here, and Christ met me before the evening ended." A true testimony must keep both halves because a polished victory can become a burden for the next person. The honest page becomes a signpost toward Jesus, not a template another believer must reproduce.

There is warmth in seeing the change, but the warmth does not become the evidence. The written promise remains the evidence. Feelings may rise when the sentence is circled, or nothing may rise at all. Philippians 1:6 remains true in either case: the One who began has not resigned from His work.

And hear this before the story, because it is not my encouragement: you are inside a work that God began and God is finishing. His word says He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been performing it through a year you could not measure.

The breakthrough

Your changed sentence may not be about anger. Perhaps last August you avoided the difficult call, and this August you made it while afraid. Perhaps you once carried an offense for three weeks and now carried it for three days before asking for help. Perhaps a prayer that used to be entirely self-accusation now contains one honest thank You.

Do not inflate it. Do not dismiss it.

Perfectionism, you are not permitted to call unfinished work absent work. Scripture says He began it, and the Holy Spirit keeps the circle around this one changed sentence honest.

The promise is not that completion must arrive this week. Philippians reaches all the way to the day of Christ, which takes the stopwatch out of your hand. There is no standard here for failing. There is only movement received with gratitude and the next step left unforced.

A year is not a spiritual examination either. August is simply far enough away to make a quiet difference visible. If a month or five years serves better, use that distance. The point is not regular measurement. Constant measuring can pull a green shoot from the soil to inspect its roots. The point is one merciful glance backward, followed by returning the work to God.

He is finishing this, and I do not have to be finished today.

You are moving right now, this August, at a speed nobody in that building can see. His word says He performs the work He began, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the performing, which is why one quiet step counts and does not need anybody's ratification.

Declare this over yourself

In Christ, His authority has been given to you to refuse comparison and receive His workmanship. However He continues and whatever remains unfinished, the outcome belongs to Him. These lines address the false verdict of stagnation, the fear of never changing, and God who began the work.

  1. Stuck, you are not the true name of this year. Philippians 1:6 says God began a good work in me, and the Holy Spirit marks one honest return with His fingerprint.
  2. Fear that I never change, be still in the name of Jesus. I refuse another person's life as my ruler, and I receive this one quiet movement without demanding completion today.
  3. God, You began this good work and You remain its faithful finisher. By Your Word and the Holy Spirit, I thank You for the circled sentence and place every unfinished page back in Your hands.
